Serious Trout fly-fishers have quietly fished tiny flies, called Midges, with surprising results for years. Why? Chironomids, the common name for these insects, are globally distributed in virtually any aquatic or semiaquatic water source. With about 10,000 known species, you are bound to have them in the waters you fly-fish. Essentially looking like a Mosquito as an adult, the Larval and Pupal stages are important food sources as well. Since these flies are often very small, with minimal materials, we offer COMBO kits. Each kit contains 2 different Midge patterns- so you end up with at least a couple dozen finished flies.
Blue Bead Midge- The Blue Bead Midge is hands down our most productive Midge pupa pattern. It is the result of a bead test where we fished various beads of different color and types (see Ed Engle’s book “Trout Lessons- Freewheeling Tactics and Alternative Techniques for the Difficult Days”. This particular bead, in this exact color scheme, out fished all others. The BlueBead Midge has caught Trout and Grayling in 23 different States and 8 different countries. We typically fish it as a “dropper” under a dry fly or in a two-fly rig with a beadhead pattern of choice.
Adult Midge- The “F” Fly is a very productive, older, Midge pattern. While it was traditionally tied with CDC for the wing, we have substituted a synthetic poly material, which we find is easier to use while learning the pattern.
