When we first met Oliver Edward’s, from the U.K. in 1997, he tied realistic and semi-realistic fly patterns for us and it opened our eyes to materials, techniques and tying sequences that we had never seen before. He also tied a certain style of wet fly and fished it a specific way which he refereed to as a Czech Nymph and Czech Nymphing. He said both were introduced to him in the 1996 World Fly Fishing Championships. Vit Misar, a guide during the championships showed this style of fly and fishing and said the roots date back to Poland and the Czech Republic from competitions of the 80’s. Jiri Klima, the Czech National Coach, and a person that we have spent some time learning from, also has tremendous knowledge of the pattern and its unique fishing style. Most tiers and fly fishers have modified the pattern and fishing method and it is has become extremely popular in the USA. If you GOOGLE “Czech Nymphing” you will find many sources that show patterns and various techniques that all fall under the umbrella of this very productive fishing style.
