To the best of our knowledge, Rowan Nyman, who worked with Craig Matthews at Blue Ribbon Flies back in the day, created the Shop Vac. Fishing traditional patterns such as the Pheasant Tail and Gold Ribbed Hares Ear, as well as Copper Johns, meant we were hesitant at first to try this pattern when we first discovered it. That, as they say, was a big mistake! This pattern flat out catches fish. We tie it and fish it in various sizes either in a Dry / Dropper system or in other “nymph” rigs with or without a strike indicator. A trick we learned from the competition anglers, is to add a hot spot of tying thread to some of your finished flies. We prefer Orange, Caddis Green and Pink. (see our photo to the left).
