Grasshopper and Cricket patterns have been around for a very long time with some of the most popular being created by Ed Schenk and Dave Whitlock. The use of various kinds of foam has also gained popularity as tiers strive to build segmented bodies that offer durability and floatability. The Foam Wing “Hopper” was introduced to me several years ago by the creator Arno Laubscher. Arno is affiliated with ScientificFly, the largest distributor of flies in South Africa and owner of Grip Tying Materials. The main feature of his “hopper” is the unique, pre-shaped foam wing by Grip- called an EZ Body (shown in the photo to the left). Arno shows his exact pattern via video on their website. Our pattern which is slightly different than his “hopper” pattern, uses the Grip “black” EZ Body and is a Cricket pattern. We use a synthetic wing material rather than deer hair also.
