Foam Wing Hopper

Grasshopper patterns have been around for a very long time with some of the most popular being created by Ed Schenk and Dave Whitlock. The use of various kinds of foam has also gained popularity as tiers strive to build segmented bodies that offer durability and floatability.  The Foam Wing Hopper was introduced to me several years ago by the creator Arno Laubscher.  Arno is affiliated with ScientificFly, the largest distributor of flies in South Africa and owner of Grip Tying Materials.  The main feature of this hopper is the unique, pre-shaped foam wing by Grip- called an EZ Body (shown in the photo to the left).  Arno shows his exact pattern via video on their website.  Our pattern, is slightly modified for “kit” purposes.  We use a synthetic wing material rather than deer hair.  Each kit contains both wing colors (Lime and Brown) and various color materials so you can tie different color Hoppers.
